Newly elected Greens Member for Balmain Kobi Shetty recently visited the Sydney Jewish Museum (SJM), where she felt honoured to have a “moving and powerful” experience.

Shetty told The AJN that newly elected Greens NSW Members of Parliament are encouraged to visit the museum “to deepen their understanding of the Holocaust and Jewish community”.

“This process was one of the positive outcomes that has come out of the dialogue between Greens NSW members of Parliament and the Jewish Board of Deputies,” Shetty said.

“The children’s section of the museum was particularly moving for me as a mother of three young children. I also felt hope when listening to the stories of communities that banded together to protect Jewish people, like in Denmark.

“The museum ensures that the reality of the Holocaust with the murder of six million Jewish people can never be forgotten. It also highlighted to me that the scourge of antisemitism can manifest in different ways, both overt and casual.”

Noting this was her first visit to the museum, NSW Jewish Board of Deputies CEO Darren Bark told The AJN it was an “emotional and exceptionally moving” experience for Shetty.

“It is impossible to understand the brutality of the Holocaust and what humanity is capable of without meeting a survivor and visiting the Sydney Jewish Museum,” Bark said.

“The Board was pleased to arrange this visit and looks forward to facilitating more important visits by MPs to the SJM throughout the year.”

Bark gifted Shetty a signed copy of Eddie Jaku’s book, The Happiest Man on Earth.

SJM CEO Kevin Sumption was also present at the tour.
